Questions and suggestions about the very common problem of incontinence.

Incontinence

Posted by Bonnie Shetler at August 19. 2008
Dorothy's 98 yr old Mom lives with her. Dorothy also takes care of 5 great grandchildren. Her children help Dorothy some. Dorothy's husband also lives in the home and has some health issues. Dorothy is a BUSY woman. Her Mom has dementia, and some bladder incontinence. She needs help from a provider who can provide assistance in solving some of the problems associated with incontinence. Any ideas out there?

Here are some ideas on incontinence.  Firstly be sure that Mom has seen a physician or urologist to be sure she is on the proper medications.

2nd:  Many families find it helpful to put people on a toilet schedule of every 2 hours.

3rd: For night time be sure that Mom has limited fluids for several hours before bed.  Coffee in the evening is of particular concern.  If she is a coffee drinker be sure to stop coffee in the late afternoon.

4th: Incontinence products do vary and unfortunately the more you spend, the better the product.  At least that is what I am seeing so far.

5th: Be sure Mom is wearing pull-ups and that they fit properly.
6th: Many women think sanitary pads are incontinence products.  Unfortunately pads are only good for little leaks and not incontinence.

Hope this helps.  By the way, if Mom is on Medicaid, Medicaid will pay for pull-ups.  Unfortunately I do not have the name of a local provider for Medicaid pull-ups, but if needed we can work on that.

Hi Bonnie,

My dad lives in texas, over the holidays we had to put dad into an asisted living. He is also using incontinence that we are getting from Home Delivery Medical. They ship direct to my dad for me.  HomeDeliveryMedical.com helped me to set-up an account for medicare part B billing. Diabetic supplies, walkers, wheelchairs, rollators, surgical dressings and more are covered by medicare. www.homedeliverymedical.com even pay the shipping cost for you.  Lauren
