Senior Law Day - 2011

This annual day-long conference presents seminars specifically for seniors and their families. Senior Law Day will provide attendees with useful information and numerous resources that will help them begin a plan of action to address their specific legal and financial needs.

If you are a senior, an adult child with an aging parent, or a caregiver, this is one day you cannot afford to miss. Mark your calendar today for this meaningful event.

Each participant will receive a copy of the 2011 Senior Law Handbook, published by the Colorado Bar Association, as well as a comprehensive book of all seminar highlights.

Senior Law Day 2011 was the the biggest and most well attended event in the history of SLD.

Basic Estate Planning: Wills, Trusts & Your Property

Learn about the wonderful world of wills, trusts, and basic estate planning. Learn about what happens if you die without a will. What is probate and is it necessary to avoid it in Colorado? You will also learn about revocable living trusts, nonprobate transfers and steps you can take to reduce the chance of contests over your plan.

Medicare Updates: What's New

This presentation will provide an overview of Medicare benefits including costs, coverage options available and important new enrollment periods. We’ll also discuss new preventive benefits including the Annual Wellness Visit and what’s new for 2012.

Advanced Directives

This session will review the various types of advanced directives, including living wills, medical powers of attorney and CPR Directives, and how these documents differ. We will also discuss the new Colorado Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment (MOST) form. Finally, we will look at how other forms such as Five Wishes may be incorporated into your planning.

Tricks of the Trade: Outsmarting Investment Fraud

The typical fraud victim is NOT who you think. Curious? You will learn how to recognize and counteract the powerful forces of persuasion and acquire new tools to prevent you from falling victim to investment scams.

Medicaid Long-Term Care Benefits

Levels of care, income requirements, and resource requirements will be discussed, as well as special rules for married couples, including the spousal income allowance and the spousal resource allowance. We will also cover how gifting (transfers of resources without fair consideration) affects eligibility and aspects of estate recovery.

When to Use an Attorney

We will explore those times in life when it is better to talk to an attorney sooner rather than later and when it is better to have some help than to try to do it yourself. The emphasis will be on wills, estate planning and elder law concerns. We will also touch on beneficiary deeds, POD accounts and beneficiary designations. We may even venture into some homeowner’s association issues, foreclosures, reverse mortgages and other areas of law.

Powers of Attorney, Guardianships & Conservatorships:

Learn about the benefits and pitfalls of medical and financial powers of attorney (POAs) – what they are and what they aren’t, when to use them and when to avoid them. The importance of POAs in the estate planning process, as well as planning for the possibility of incapacity will be explored. Attendees will receive valuable information about the importance of the prudent use of POAs, as well as when guardianships and/or conservatorships should be considered, and how to ensure your interests are protected.

Veterans Benefits and Long-term Care Planning

Presenters will discuss VA benefits generally and the VA Aid and Attendance Special Pension benefit as part of planning for long term care needs for a qualifying veteran or a widow(er) of a veteran. Also addressed: How Medicaid and the Aid and Attendance special pension benefit can be used together to pay for the soaring costs of long-term care. This informative program is a must for any veteran or family member of a veteran!

Probate Administration: What to Do when Someone Dies

Family Law issues affect people of all ages – even Seniors. This session provides a broad overview of legal considerations for seniors as they are affected by: marriage (common law or formal), divorce, remarriage and blending families (including some estate planning considerations), grandparents raising their grandchildren, and brief discussion on alternative dispute resolution practices that can help avoid costly conflict and litigation.
