Nursing Home

How to Choose? We have gathered information sources here from HCFA, to assist in choosing a nursing home and Medicare, with where to compare nursing homes in different locations.

The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has published a booklet entitled How to Choose a Nursing Home which contains a fairly comprehensive list of ideas and suggestions for deciding when a nursing home is appropriate, payment options, how to search for an appropriate facility, and a checklist for assessing the quality of a particular nursing home. We have reprinted both the guide and the checklist in web page format so they may be viewed or printed by most web page browsers.

A list of local nursing homes can be downloaded or previewed at the Larimer County Area Agency on Aging site. (This link will open a new browser window. To return here, please close the new browser window)

In Larimer County, nursing facilities are designed to provide 24-hour nursing care for those incapable of functioning independently due to a chronic illness, disabling injury or the need for short-term rehabilitation. Some facilities have specialized units for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Medicare has recently developed a website that provides information on the past performance of all nursing homes in the country. You can compare nursing homes in any location by going to the Medicare Web site. (This link will open a new browser window. To return here, please close the new browser window.)
